Literacy Learning
Learning to Read (gr. K-2)
Orton–Gillingham was the first teaching approach specifically designed to help struggling readers by explicitly teaching the connections between letters and sounds. Today — decades later — many reading programs include Orton–Gillingham ideas.
This highly structured approach introduced the idea of breaking reading and spelling down into smaller skills involving letters and sounds and then building on these skills over time. It also pioneered the multi-sensory or a more widely used term, multimodal, approach to teaching reading, which is considered highly effective for teaching students with dyslexia and is just good teaching practice for all students in foundational reading instruction. This means that instructors/teachers use sight, hearing, touch, and movement to help students connect language with letters and words.
Orton–Gillingham focuses on teaching kids to read at the word level. While it does help develop reading comprehension, through efficient decoding and promoting fluency, it is not the primary goal.
The Orton-Gillingham approach uses multiple modalities to help kids learn. For example, students might learn the letter by seeing it, saying its name, and sounding it out while writing it.
Orton–Gillingham also puts a strong emphasis on understanding the "how" and "why" behind reading. Students may explore why the letter c sounds one way in the word cat and another way in the word city. Once they know consistent rules and patterns, they're better able to decode words on their own.
"There is no comprehension strategy powerful enough to compensate for the fact that you can't read the words" Dr. Anita Archer
Reading to Learn (gr. 3-12)
There are various programs/curriculums that teach literacy to upper grades (3-12). At A2 Literacy Tutoring, we use various strategies that focus on fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Keys to Literacy is one of these evidence based programs we use. These practices incorporate a multitude of writing, organizational techniques, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension strategies for all students.
If students are showing gaps in their phoneme/grapheme knowledge, explicit instruction in phonics will be added to the instruction to fill those gaps.
